The Cap and How It Distinguishes

A retail entrepreneur in Roseville, Michigan, Mike “Mazin” Samona is the CEO of Smokers Outlet, now Wild Bill's Tobacco. Leading the state’s largest retailer of tobacco and vape products, Mike Samona features new product releases and exceptional deals on in-demand products such as The Founder, Chloe, and Moonlight Cigars.

For connoisseurs, one of the distinguishing aspects of a premium cigar is the cap, or the portion of wrapper leaf designed to cover the cigar head. This is the closed end that is placed in the mouth, with a small bit cut or punched out before smoking, to allow air to travel through.

The preferred technique of closing the head is called “flag and cap,” in which the “flag” is a wrapper extension that is cut precisely, and folded and secured over the head using vegetable gum. On top of this, the cap, an additional teardrop-shaped piece of tobacco wrapper, is woven in.

With triple cap cigars, a third cap, made from excess wrapper leaf, is adhered to the end of the head. This offers extra protection and also creates a refined, rounded appearance. For the most part, triple cap production is confined to Cuba, though it has spread to premium cigar factories in Honduras and Nicaragua.
